भीमा कोरेगावमधील जयस्तंभ – राजकारण, जात आणि ब्रिटिशसत्तेची स्मृती

विस्मृतीचे महत्त्व

कोरेगावचे स्मारक वासाहतिक सत्ताधाऱ्यांनी बांधलेले असले, तरी आजच्या ब्रिटिश जनतेच्या स्मरणोत्सवी अवकाशामध्ये त्याचा समावेश होत नाही. वासाहतिक स्मृती- विशेषतः हिंसक लढायांच्या स्मृती आजच्या ब्रिटनमध्ये अभिमानाचा विषय ठरत नाहीत, ही वस्तुस्थिती कदाचित या स्मृतिभ्रंशाला कारणीभूत ठरली असावी.

भारतातील उच्च जातीयांमध्येही असाच स्मृतिभ्रंश आढळतो. पेशव्यांचे पुणे शहर आता सॉफ्टवेअर आणि शिक्षण यांचे केंद्र बनले आहे. नमुना म्हणून उच्चजातीय व नवश्रीमंत वर्गातील (यांच्यासाठी ‘कम्प्युटर कूली’ अशी संज्ञा वापरली जाते) १३० लोकांना कोरेगाव स्मारकाविषयी विचारले तर, त्यांच्यापैकी एकालाही हे स्मारक कुठे आहे ते माहीत नव्हते.३५

अर्थात, उच्चभ्रूंचा स्मृतिभ्रंश संपूर्ण स्वरूपाचा आहे असे म्हणता येणार नाही. परस्परविरोधी स्मृतीही अस्तित्वात आहेत. महाराष्ट्रामध्ये १९७०च्या दशकात अनेक लोकप्रिय ऐतिहासिक (खरेतर, अनैतिहासिक) कादंबऱ्या मोठ्या प्रमाणात खपण्याची लाट उसळली होती.

मराठी भाषक मध्यमवर्गीयांच्या इतिहासविषयक आकलनावर यातील अनेक कादंबऱ्यांचा प्रभाव अजूनही आहे. यातील दोन महत्त्वाच्या कादंबऱ्यांमध्ये कोरेगावच्या लढाईचे ओझरते वर्णन आहे. या दोन्ही कादंबऱ्यांचे लेखक ब्राह्मण आहेत. यातील ‘मंत्रावेगळा’ ही ना. सं. इनामदारलिखित कादंबरी शेवटच्या पेशव्याच्या जीवनावर आधारीत आहे. कोरेगावची लढाई पेशव्यांनी जिंकली होती, असा दावा या कादंबरीत आहे.३६

पेशव्यांच्या लढायांविषयी अशा पर्यायी स्मृती तयार करण्याचा प्रवाह अलीकडच्या काळात अधिक जोम धरू लागला आहे. पानिपतमध्ये १७६१ सालच्या लढाईमध्ये पेशव्यांच्या सैन्याचा पूर्ण पाडाव झाला होता, परंतु आज त्याचा स्मरणोत्सव साजरा करण्यासाठी अनेक दणदणीत मेळावे भरवले जातात.३७ या मेळाव्यांमध्ये केल्या जाणाऱ्या कथनांमधून जणू काही ही लढाई पेशवे जिंकले होते असे सुचवले जाते.

आजच्या नवबौद्ध संस्कृतीमध्ये कोरेगाव स्मारकाचे अतिशय महत्त्वाचे स्थान आहे. कोरेगावची लढाई आणि या ठिकाणाला आंबेडकरांनी दिलेली भेट यांचे दस्तावेजीकरण करण्यासाठी व त्याचा स्मरणोत्सव करण्यासाठी इंटरनेट व इतर इलेक्ट्रॉनिक माध्यमांचा वापर केला जातो.

कोरेगाव स्तंभाच्या प्रतिमेसाठी इंटरनेटवर शोध घेतल्यास स्मारकाच्या स्तंभाची शेकडो छायाचित्रे सापडतात. यू-ट्यूबवर यासंबंधी चित्रफितीही उपलब्ध आहेत.३८ कोरेगाव स्मारकाशी संबंधित किमान डझनभर इंग्रजी व मराठी ब्लॉग-नोंदी सापडतात.

कोरेगावमधील लढाई आणि त्यातील महार सैनिकांची भूमिका यासंबंधीची माहिती या नोंदींमध्ये दिलेली असते आणि अस्पृश्यांनी निर्धार केला तर ते काय साध्य करू शकतात याची आठवणही वाचकांना करून दिली जाते.

निष्कर्ष

तर, कोरेगाव भीमा इथल्या जयस्तंभाने परस्परविरोधी स्मृती निर्माण केल्या आहेत. त्यांची निर्मिती करणाऱ्या गटांच्या भिन्न हितसंबंधांचे प्रतिनिधित्व या स्मृती करतात. उच्चजातीय वर्चस्वाचे प्रतीक असलेल्या पेशवा सत्तेच्या माहात्म्याचा स्मरणोत्सव करू इच्छिणारे लोक एकतर कोरेगावच्या लढाईकडे दुर्लक्ष करतात किंवा पेशव्यांच्या विजयाच्या मिथ्यास्मृती निर्माण करतात.

हा जयस्तंभ साम्राज्याच्या स्मृतिस्थळांपैकी एक असला तरी साम्राज्याच्या मातृभूमीमध्ये तो बहुतांश विस्मृतीत गेला आहे, आणि पश्चिम भारतातील स्मरणोत्सवासंदर्भात त्याचा कायापालट झाला आहे. साम्राज्यवादी सत्तेची आठवण म्हणून त्याकडे पाहिले जात नाही.

उच्चजातीय दडपशाही उलथवून टाकण्याच्या अस्पृश्यांच्या क्षमतेचा ‘ऐतिहासिक पुरावा’ म्हणून पूर्वाश्रमीचा अस्पृश्य समुदाय या स्मारकाकडे पाहातो. भारतीय समाजावर अजूनही जातीव्यवस्था वर्चस्व गाजवून आहे.३९ या पार्श्वभूमीवर, वर्तमानामधील प्रभुत्वसत्तेसाठी (hegemony) सुरू असलेल्या चढाओढीचे प्रकटीकरण स्मृतींच्या चढाओढीतून होत असते, याचा दाखला म्हणून कोरेगाव स्मारकाकडे पाहाता येते.
